Ideal for family cycling

Braunton to Barnstaple is approx 6 miles along the Tarka Trail with the vast majority being on a safe, off-road, flat surface. There are two places where you will need to cross the road at Velator and Chivenor, but in each case they are not busy roads and crossing places for cyclists have been provided.

On route you will pass Velator Wetlands, an environmental project which is discussed in the first audio guide.

You will then pass the Royal Marines base at Chivenor before crossing the road. On the other side of the road, you will cycle out of a wooded area and into the open to enjoy the scenery of the Taw esturay with views over to Fremington Quay.

There is ample parking in both Braunton and Barnstaple and plenty of places for refreshment in both. There is also cycle hire in both Braunton and Barnstaple. There are also some a handful of places to stop for refreshment on the trail itself.

On a windy day, the wind can be quite strong coming from Braunton to Barnstaple, so you may find cycling back to Braunton much more tiring than cycling to Barnstaple!
