Arguably the most spectacular coastal views along the Tarka Trail

The Valley of the Rocks offers, arguably the most spectacular coastal views along the Tarka Trail. The Valley of Rocks is a dry valley that runs parallel to the coast about half a mile west of Lynton. It is noted for its herd of goats, its geology and its stunning views. The valley is believed to owe its existence to a former extension of the valley of the East Lyn River which now meets the sea at Lynmouth.

Located within Exmoor National Park, The Valley of the Rocks is a great place for both families and hardened walkers alike. There are short walks and picnic spots for day visitors and lots of myths and legends to entertain the children. The Tarka Trail runs through the valley making use of the South West Coast path linking nearby Lynton and Lynmouth with the rest of the North Devon coast. The coastal cliffs here are amongst the highest in Britain and provide a real challenge for climbing enthusiasts.

Some of the paths are quite narrow and some quite exposed to the drop to the sea below. Dogs are welcome but due to grazing sheep and goats, may be best kept on leads.

As well as the coast path, there is also vehicle access to the valley and two public car parks adjacent to a tea room and the cricket club.

The nearby towns of Lynton and Lynmouth are situated at the top and bottom of a steep hill and connected by road and by the Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway which dates back to 1890 and uses an ingenious system of water pressure to climb the 500m cliff face.

Both Lynton and Lynmouth are packed with gift shops, arts and craft shops, pubs, restaurants, guest houses and hotels, all set within the beautiful surroundings of the Lyn river valley.

The South West Coats path website features a walk around the valley.
