75th anniversary of assault training
In the run up to the D-Day landings in the Second World War, US soldiers were based in Braunton and an assault training centre was created on the Braunton Burrows. An organisation called The Friends of the Assault Training Centre help to maintain the training facilities which this year marks it’s 75th anniversary, having been built back in 1943.
The FATC along with Cobbaton Combat Collection and North Devon MVT will be hosting a special D-Day celebration on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of June this year which will include living history groups dressed in WW2 military uniform, WW2 vehicles and a special fly past by the BBMF (Battle of Britain Memorial Flight), all taking place on and around Saunton Sands beach and the Braunton Burrows.
